How to Care Multiple Dogs at Home

Raising a single dog is a major responsibility as such. Have a few more dogs at home? That is another type of love, forbearance, and control.

You see it yourself, if you have two or more dogs, the house is noisier, messier, and somehow prettier. However, taking care of more than one dog involves more than feeding. It requires organization, training and know more about the personality of individual dogs.

How to Care for Multiple Dogs at Home

In this article, I am going to describe simply how you can keep several dogs at home without being stressed even when you are a novice.

1. Realize That Not all Dogs Are the same.

Although you might have found your dogs of the same breed, their characters may be totally different.

One may be calm.
One may be dominant.
One may be very sensitive.
Don't treat them as a group, treat them as people.

As an illustration, in my case, one dog has taken time to take food slowly and the other has finished the food in two minutes and attempts to cheat out of the first bowl. So I was forced to change the feeding style each of them. Minor details have a significant impact.

2. Create a Fixed Daily Routine

Dogs love routine. Routine is even more significant when you have several dogs.

Set fixed times for:
  • Feeding
  • Walks
  • Playtime
  • Training
  • Sleep
The dogs will fight less when they are aware of their expectations and they also feel safe.

Feed them as much as possible at the same time of the day. Take them out walking together in case they are pleasurable, or singly in case they drag too hard.

Uniformity discourages misunderstanding within the pack.

3. Separate Feeding Areas

This is very important.

Even dogs that are friendly may grow possessive, in regard to food.

To avoid fights:

  •  Feed them in various places of the room.
  •  Or feed in separate rooms
  •  Remove bowls once finished

Do not ever leave one dog to annoy another dog as it eats. Food aggression may begin as mild and develop into severity at later stages.

Keep the dogs fed also according to their weight and health condition.

Different portions are required by puppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs.

4. Give Individual Attention

This is what the pet parents do not pay attention to.

You can have several dogs on hand, though you need to spend time with them individually.

Walk up the dogs separately occasionally. Pet them and sit with them one after another. Talk to them.

This helps to avoid jealousy and establish better bonding.

Dogs can not talk, they experience everything.

5. Maintain Proper Hygiene

More dogs means:

  •   More fur
  •   More cleaning
  •   More smell

It is important to be groomed regularly.

  •   Brush their coat 3 - 4 times a week
  •   Take them once in 3- 4 weeks (except where they are instructed to the contrary)
  •   Clean ears regularly
  •   Trim nails on time

Bedding should be clean and should be washed weekly.

Good environment is clean and keeps the infections out of your house as well.

6. Potentiate Fully Vaccinations and Records.

When you own too many dogs, you will end up forgetting about date.

Keep a pocket or computer note with:

  •  Vaccination dates
  •  Deworming schedule
  •  Vet visits
  •  Allergies and medical problems.

The moment one of the dogs falls ill, isolate and visit a vet as soon as possible.

Dogs that dwell together develop some infections easily. It is always easier to avoid than to treat.

7. Manage Conflicts Calmly

Dogs also fight even when trained.

Common reasons:

  •  Food
  •  Toys
  •  Attention
  •  New dog in the house

If a fight starts:

  •  Stay calm
  •  Do not scream loudly
  •  Divest yourself, better leave your hand between them.

Majority of minor disagreements are on dominance and can be resolved over time.

However, it may be necessary to seek professional training support in the case of frequent or aggressive fights.

8. Provide Enough Space

Dogs need space to relax.

You can even have a small house and you can:

•  Provide individual sleeping space.
•  Do not make them sleep with one another.
•  Allow quiet corners

Worse still, crowding will amplify stress and irritation.

9. Exercise Is Non-Negotiable

Several dogs have joined power. Unless this energy is given-out, the energy turns into destructive behaviour.

Daily exercise reduces:

•  Barking
•  Chewing furniture
•  Fighting
•  Hyperactivity

You can:

•  Take them for walks
•  Play fetch
•  Use interactive toys

A tired dog is a happy dog.

10. Love Them Equally - But Fairly

Same treatment is not necessarily equal love.

In case one of the dogs is older, he or she might require softening food.
In case the individual is overweight, it requires portion control.
In case of anxiety it requires reassurance.

Please be impartial to their needs.

Problems of Owning Two or More Dogs.

Let’s be honest. It is not always easy.
  •  Expenses increase
  •  Vet bills increase
  •  The time management is hard.
  •  Travel becomes complicated
But the joy multiplies too.

To see them playing and sleeping together, shielding each other, it is something really very special.

                                                   Final Thoughts❤

The upkeep of a number of dogs in the house involves planning, patience, and consistency.

However, when it comes to routine and understanding their personalities, then all can be controlled.

Remember:

  •   Routine brings stability
  •   Fights are prevented by separate feeding.
  •   Trust is built through individual attention.
  •   Health care on a regular basis avers bigger issues.

You should think practically, but at the same time, you must go with your heart with responsibility when you are considering adopting another dog.

Keeping more than one dog is not all about keeping pets. It is of creating a small family at your house.
